HP 51641A, 51645A/G, C1823A/D/G, C6615DN/AN, C6578DN/AN Cartridges

This method is used to reset the cartridge ID E-PROM in many model of DeskJet printers which utilize the above cartridges with an ink level indicator. This method may not work with Multifunction versions such as PSC or Officejet machines.

Procedure

  1. Remove affected cartridge from you printer.
  2. Place a piece of scotch tape over the top left four contacts as shown in the picture to the right.
  3. Place cartridge back into printer, close lid and wait 10 seconds.   The tape needs to be on the contact points when inserting cartridges.
  4. Lift the lid and wait for cartridge to return to loading position.  The printer may show an error message at this time.  This is not uncommon and is nothing to be concerned about.
  5. Remove cartridge from printer.
  6. Remove tape from left contact point and place on top right four contact points as shown in the bottom image.
  7. Place cartridge back into printer, close lid and wait 10 seconds.  The tape needs to be on the contact points when inserting cartridges.
  8. Lift the lid and wait for cartridge to return to the loading position.  The printer may show an error message at this time.  Simply ignore the message.
  9. Remove cartridge from printer.
  10. Remove tape from cartridge.
  11. Place cartridge back into the  printer.  Cartridge ink level indicator should now read full.

Additional Information:

Since this method is designed to "trick" the printer into forgetting the ID of the cartridge, it can fail to work. If for some reason your printer is being stubborn the you will need to repeat the entire process above, with the top three contacts and then repeat once more, covering the top two.

Alternate Method for Older HP DeskJet printers using above cartridges.

On some HP printers, including the HP 700 Series of and many 800 series printers 3 years or older, you can reset the ID E-PROM using the printer power function. These type HP printers retain the ID of the last 5 cartridges used (5 black and 5 color). When the printer cartridges are not present it removes an ID set from the E-PROM . After 5 times it has removed all of the ID numbers and therefore believes the cartridges are now new. This method may not work with OfficeJet  or PSC machines

Procedure

  1. Remove both black and color cartridges from your printer.
  2. Turn your printer and an off 5 times. In between the on and off allow twenty seconds for the machine to power down completely. When turning printer on allow to go through normal start up so that it realizes there are no cartridges.
  3. After 5 repeats, re-install the cartridges. The printer should treat them as new.
HP #56, #57 Cartridges

These cartridges are used in newer DeskJet 5550, and Photosmart 7150, 7350, and 7550 printers. The procedure is similar to the tape method used above. Printers using the #27 and #28 cartridges may also be able to use this procedure with certain printers, but this has not been confirmed. This procedure may not work with PSC or OfficeJet machines.

  1. Remove affected cartridge from the printer.
  2. Apply a small piece of tape to the contact grid to cover the contact marked in green as shown in diagrams at right. Only that contact should be blocked.
  3. Install the cartridge in the printer. The printer will tell you that there is a problem with the ink cartridge. Click "ok".  The printer will then start to print an alignment page.  Let the printer  print the alignment page.
  4. Remove the cartridge from the printer again.  Leave the first piece of tape on the contact first covered. Now apply a second piece of tape to the contact shown in the diagrams as either light blue or purple.
  5. Install the cartridge into the printer again.  This time with both contacts being covered with tape. The printer will go through the same process as before, telling you there is a problem with the cartridge.  Click "ok".  The printer will start to print an alignment sheet, allow the job to complete.
  6. Remove the cartridge once more from the printer.  Remove both pieces of tape used to cover the contacts.  Make sure that there isn't any residue left from the tape on the contacts.  If you do see residue, gently clean the contact with rubbing alcohol.
  7. Reinstall the cartridge without any tape. The inks levels should be reset and you can use the printer as normal.

The #58 cartridge uses the same contact tape arrangement as the #57 cartridge.

Alternate Method - Interrupt

This method can be used if the above method repeatedly fails to work. This method may not work on OfficeJet or PSC Machines.

  1. Remove the cartridge from the printer
  2. Immediately unplug the printer to interrupt the loading/unloading process., leaving the carriage in the load position.
  3. Install the cartridge again and plug in the printer.

Alternate Method - Swap - All Model HP Cartridges Listed Above

This method can be used if the above method repeatedly fails to work. This method may not work on OfficeJet or PSC Machines. You will need a total of 3 cartridges of the same type.

  1. Put the refilled cartridge in the printer.  Allow it to recognize the cartridge and print an alignment page.
  2. Take that cartridge out and place in the first extra cartridge. Allow it to recognize and print an alignment page.
  3. Take the first extra cartridge out and place the second extra cartridge in.  Allow it to recognize and print an alignment page.
  4. Take the second extra cartridge out.  Place the refilled cartridge back in the printer.
  5. An alignment page will print and then the estimated ink level will be reset to full.
